The Third Console

I'm thinking of getting it. The PS3.
I assumed everybody already has a Wii just in case their gran pops in (Although any of my grandparents drop in on me I will have to assume the zombie Apocalypse has begun).
I know socky has one, Elvis mentioned he just got one last night. Anyone else?

I was mainly thinking of getting it so I could watch avatar in as pretty a way as possible, but i wouldn't mind having a go at heavy rain.
Obviously anything shooty or cross platform would be on the real piece of hardware.

Any Thoughts? In particular how much difference the 250Gb one will make to the 120Gb? mainly because i can find the 120 with heavy rain bundled but not with a 250.

Not very up on them mate. As I said last night the PS3 was a Christmas present for Elise.

Mainly so she can play Final Fantasy 7, Little Big Planet and Flower.

It's ok as far as it goes, and yeah I'd probably use it for any generic JRPG.

Can't imagine there's a lot of difference between the 250Gb and 120Gb models.

Yeah no-one needs that to happen to their Xbox... unless you have a VERY understanding insurance company. I mostly use my PS3 for watching Blu rays as I got it free with my phone contract.. there are a couple of games I do want to try as they are only on PS3 like hard rain but for online gaming it doesn't compare to the xbox ... they are worlds apart!

Oh and Avatar was the GREATEST film (movie for all those yanks out there) I have ever seen.... well at least it had all the scenes from all the greatest films (movies for the benefit of those colonials) so it had to be amazing right?? Oh and if you haven't seen it ... watch the South park imagination land trilogy ... James cameron is SERVED!! genious!

My flatmate has recently bought a PS3 in order to play Heavy Rain so I might be able to illuminate you on this front. Although the online aspect of it is free, you get what you pay for, hence PS Network being rubbish for online play. Also you don't get a headset in the bundle and bluetooth headset that you can get is pants. The console itself is nice enough and the performance gap between 360 and PS3 is closing in most cases. PS3 specific stuff is lovely, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2 etc look stunning but where there is a 360 version I'd buy that (apart from massive JRPG stuff like Final Fantasy which is 10 times better on a PS3 due to the storage space on a blu-ray). Heavy Rain as a game has left me a bit cold. I love the concept but when a game tries so hard to be a film you have to compare it to films. Heavy Rain would be a shit film. Really bad script, spongey walking controls (I spend most of my time bouncing between fixed cameras or humping the wall) and the gameplay is basically Dragon's Lair with knobs on, it's just an endless series of quick time events. I much prefer watching someone else playing than playing it myself. Other stuff I've played on it like Flower, Nobi-nobi Boy, Motor Storm, and that Drake's Fortune series (can't remember the actual title) has all been brilliant.

If you've got the cash, get one for the exclusive stuff but don't get too excited about Heavy Rain. Also PS Home is a frightening mess.

In so far as storage, a little known fact: you can plug in any USB external hard-drive (I think, it may be firewire) so don't bother spending on the giant version.

Also; it mainly outputs as far as 720 whereas the 360 goes up to 1080p, so if you've got a giant telly it won't look as crisp. Anything under a 42" and you won't notice the difference though.

PS don't EVER get a Wii, I had one and never used it, crap graphics card, too tiring to play and needs to much room. Also the basic Motion Sensor is rubbish so you're forced into buying the Motion Plus add on.

Meh, I wasn't that enamoured of his review. Whilst factually it wasn't far off, his whole style was just annoying in that sort of "I wonder what a claw hammer would do to the back of your head" sort of way...

It's a kind of running joke with his other older reviews, the character of Mr. Plinkett kind of evolves as his reviews have gone on. Instead of being the ponce hole film student that he clearly is if he does a crazy impression of a mad old psycho killer it made me think "well if a mad old psycho killer can work this out then why can't everyone else and the director?"

It is a rather abrasive attempt at humour though to be sure.

Yours is the first criticism (other than the terrible voice acting) of heavy rain that i've heard, but probably the only comment not influenced by advertising revenue.
I'm now 50 /50 on it.
I think i'll make myself finish GTA - ballad of gay tony first and then see how close alan wake is to it's shipping date.

Excellent youtube review btw, the fact he used a close up picture of my moggy as a comparison to the lead lady's schnozz probably shows why i liked the Enron vs blue Indians show. Only criticism of the review style is he doesn't quite time the cutaways or visual gags right, he needs to watch more daily show with jon stewart.

less daily show (too preachy and over exaggerating) and more thrillbillies.

It's not that I think Heavy Rain is rubbish, I just don't think it's a good game. As an interactive B-Movie thriller / choose your own adventure it is excellent, but as a game it is sub-average. This should make sense I hope. Anyway, I certainly wouldn't buy a PS3 on the strength of Heavy Rain, I would buy it on the strength of Uncharted 1 and 2, Killzone 2, Flower, Nobi-Nobi boy, God of War 3, Motor Storm, etc etc. There's plenty of original content to make the price tag worth it but I really would stick to 360 for cross title publications and multi-player. Also, hardly any of us exist in PS3 world and we'd miss you, you great big cuddly chunk of man meat!

tosh is only on its second season, which was a lot better than the first. as you know every show on comedy central constantly blasts it for being cheap. hence why they don't like outsiders watching without paying. typical for most television networks.

as for john stewart: who's dick did e suck to get that job, or who sucked his dick?......either way behind his sarcasm and outrageous political views, is a sad lonely man who wishes that his show could be taken seriously. though, his show is funny at times and not made to be taken seriously, he adds to the left-winged brainwash agenda, here in the states. and unfortunately people buy into his crap instead of just laughing at his cynical jokes.
